From Oroville, Washington (RNS) - Oregon native Joe Horn
has been at it since he could hold a guitar. He's
recognized as one of the best in the Northwest and lately
has been drawing encore requests wherever he performs. Yet
being good at the guitar is only one of Joe's passions.
For him and his family band "Triple Threat",
people matter too. They've taken the stage from Oregon to
Washington with one thing in mind: to raise money for the
victims of recent hurricanes.
"Money
from all album sales will be matched for the hurricane
relief," Joe told the crowd at the Rendezvous
Rhythm and Blues Festival
in Oroville, Washington over Labor Day Weekend.
"Whatever you do, we will match." His challenge
was met with generosity from the festival crowd and the
band's albums selling out by the case. The event raised
hundreds of dollars for the American Red Cross.
Other
musicians from across the west coast were also on
hand at the Rendezvous
Rhythm and Blues Festival
to sing and play their music, including Oregon
favorites Too Slim and the Taildraggers, Coyote
Blues, and Ben Rice and The Youth of Blues.
Particularly
strong response came from the Rendezvous crowd
when Joe, referring to the tragedy in New Orleans,
said, "This song has never had more meaning
than it does today" before launching his band
Triple Threat into a wild and unforgettable
performance of ZZ Top's "Jesus
just left Chicago and he's bound for New
Orleans."
The
song hailed by many attendees as the top
performance during the festival--one that brought
the crowd from their seats cheering "More!
More!"--was Triple Threat's performance of
Jimi Hendrix's legendary song, "Voodoo
Child". A video clip of the band's version of
this song can be downloaded here.
